Academies in East Yorkshire

The NUT is fundamentally opposed to Academies.  It inevitably leads to the further privatisation of education and takes schools further out of local democratic control.  However where academies exist we are committed to continuing to protect our members and cooperate in providing a first rate education service for all.

The following East Riding schools have converted to Academy status:

South Hunsley, Cottingham High, Hessle High/Penshurst Federation, Swanland Primary, Goole High, Beverley Grammar.

At present Woldgate College, Pocklington are in the process of conversion & Snaith School are consulting.

Our Association has affiliated to the Anti Academy Alliance to support any members who wish to fight the academisation of their school.

The following school NUT members have already passed a resolution, by very large majorities, against becoming academies:

                                                                         Driffield School

                                                                         Wolfreton School

All we seek is an open, transparent, public consultation process for any school taking the slippery path to Academy status.  We would welcome a public debate in our area where these issues could be discussed in a public forum.

For more information there are leaflets about funding, pay and conditions and what local authorities do now.

To help your school staff combat the move to an academy there is a model resolution that you can pass and send to Governors and your Head to make your feelings clear.
