Teacher Governors – are you one already or considering standing?

The role of Teacher Governor is a crucial one for the teaching staff of a school.  It needs a colleague who is principled and willing to speak up on behalf of the staff.  The teacher Governor should canvas the views of staff on all issues the Governing Body considers and ensure that all Governors are aware of staff feelings about issues.  It is equally important that they feed back to staff after Governors’ meetings.

Ideally Teacher Governor and NUT Rep should be two individuals who can work together, in a large school it helps if they see each other regularly.  It is possible for one person to hold both roles but it spreads the load and adds more than one voice to a common cause where it is two.

The law regarding Governing Bodies, their roles and responsibilities is detailed and weighty.  A Guide To The Law For Governors (250 pages +) can be found here.

Because of the importance of the role NUT National Training for Governors is available and highly recommended.
